As for selfish: I find it can hardly be respected if people who don't even support themselves pretend to help others. If you volunteer for a social project in another country, better not write to your parents and ask them for money. You're old enough to be sending them money yourself. And better not boast other people you've managed to convince to join you on that project: what should count for you is what you can do, not what you shame someone else into doing, otherwise you're making it far too easy on yourself. I've once collected donations in a mall. I begged strangers for money, which was supposed to help terror victims. Later that organisation never showed up again in my town, they didn't even want me to send them the booklet with the receipts back. Conclusion: there's plenty of people feeling they do good by participating in dubious projects. I don't know any of those terror victims, I can't check if any of them has received any aid thanks to my work and other people's money. You're more likely to know you've done any good if you help someone take a bulky suitcase off the shelf in a train or (better, if you're still not doing that) help your kids with their homework.

Yes, this is exactly what I meant with taking responsibility to do good. If you want to do good, make sure that it is you and your money that does good! Don't try and use someone else's money and effort for you to do good.
